A prestigious seven storey development on the island of Jersey has been completed with a final touch to keep people safe – a stainless steel HVM Guardrail from Securiscape.
Cyril Le Marquand House, which is located in Parade Gardens, St Helier, provides a mix of versatile office spaces and public service spaces in the heart of the island’s capital.
Admired for its curved corner entrance and a façade featuring a robust vertical grid, the building also uses natural stone cladding to resonate with Jersey’s architectural heritage, creating an attractive exterior for a building which provides more than 1,200 workspaces inside in a modern, open-plan office environment.
It is a building which reflects the very best of Jersey, but outside there is a touch of Derbyshire, in the form of a 6.4m guardrail, which features three panels of marine grade 316 stainless steel with a brushed finish, installed outside the side entrance to the building.
Developed and manufactured in Derbyshire, our HVM Guardrail is capable of withstanding a deliberate or accidental 45° or head-on impact from a 2.5 tonne truck travelling at 30mph, an achievement which has earned the product its IWA-14 rating.
It is designed to use standard 2m fence panels which are connected to Securiscape’s Smartpost system, which is sunk into the ground.
The result is a guardrail which looks no different to the many thousands of similar roadside guardrails up and down the road, but which is capable of doing the one thing regular pedestrian guardrails can’t do – stand up to a collision from a vehicle without buckling.
It is also cost-effective and, since it is no different to the standard guardrails, it does not need planning permission.

“The UK’s roads are getting busier with increased traffic all the time and in a site like this, where a door leads out onto a narrow pavement, installing a pedestrian guardrail helps to keep people safe while also preventing them from walking out onto the carriageway in order to avoid someone who is stepping out of the doorway.”
Securiscape was founded in the wake of the 2007 attack at Glasgow International Airport and designs, manufactures and installs a range of HVM products tested to standards such as PAS 68:2010 and IWA14.
They include its own patented street planters and its Glide Bollards, which consists of a row of moveable security bollards mounted onto a shallow rail.
