They might only be there for safety reasons, but the latest installation of our HVM security pedestrian guardrails proved that appearance is still important, especially when you’re talking about the spiritual home of UK motorsport.
Earlier this year we were asked to install the guardrails – 170m worth of them – to protect people walking to and from the Silverstone Experience, a £20m museum which explores the history of the motor racing circuit and featuring displays of priceless cars and other artefacts from down the years.
So far, so good, except that these are no ordinary guardrails, since they also had to set and scene and, as such, had a style and an appearance all of their own, thanks to a bespoke design and a hand-painted finish.
For many companies, this would be an undertaking too far, but our guardrail system is designed to be flexible and we were able to accommodate such a specific request and finished the job well within the timescale too.

The secret to the success of the HVM guardrail system is the way it works with Securiscape’s Smartpost system, which can be installed into the ground using ordinary Postcrete but which can still withstand a collision with a 2.5 tonne pick-up truck travelling at 30mph.
Once these are in place, it is then a matter of attaching the fencing panels, which can either be similar to the standard pedestrian guardrail design seen along thousands of miles worth of Britain’s roads, or made to order with a special design.
In the case of Silverstone, we put the spoke into bespoke – by manufacturing panels consisting of slanted bars designed to resemble the distinctive wire wheels found on classic British racing cars such as the MG.
Then, for longevity, we applied a hand-painted grey finish to the panels and posts to match the architecture of the building.
Mark Stone managing director of Securiscape, said: “Our HVM guardrail is a game-changer because of the way it is flexible enough to offer high level protection in conjunction with an aesthetically pleasing finish.
“That flexibility has been put to good use at Silverstone to satisfy what was a very specific brief. We also installed 11 safety bollards outside the Silverstone Experience as part of the same job and we’re extremely happy with the outcome.”
