Proving that security doesn’t have to be ugly, Securiscape is delighted to present a new version of our innovative Securipods, our exciting hostile vehicle mitigation devices designed to keep people attending temporary outdoor events safe.
Following a significant investment and years of R&D, we are now put the new SecuriPods into production after they brought an 18-tonne truck to a controlled and complete halt during tests, earning the coveted IWA-14 international rating.
The new pods are an upgrade on our original SecuriPod system, which used a series of seven-foot-tall units linked by steel cables to trap vehicles in an impenetrable barrier.
The old pods have been replaced by cubes, which can be placed in a row in order to block off a street or entrance to a park or public space and are only 790mm high.
They are also 50% lighter, but still offer cyclists and pedestrians, including families with pushchairs and people using wheelchairs or mobility scooters, easy access while halting any vehicle which tries to penetrate the system.
Unlike permanent HVM products, the cubes do not use surface-mounted bolts or concrete, meaning they do not damage or disturb the road or pavement, but instead contain a series of secret angled steel fins, which become embedded into a vehicle on impact.
This prevents the vehicle from breaking free, while the weight of the pod, plus its innovative Claw System, stops it from moving any further forward or backwards, preventing further damage and loss of life.
Each SecuriPod is supplied covered in a recycled polyethylene cover, which can be supplied in any colour in order to match an event’s corporate branding, while its flat sides can be used for wording, branding or directional signage.
They can also incorporate a planter, meaning that organisers can mount floral displays on top of the cubes in order to decorate the entrance to their events and further disguise the security below.
The result is an extremely discreet and easy-to-install security installation – one trained person can seal off a road in just 10 minutes – which offers peace of mind for organisers and anyone attending a large outdoor public gathering, such as a music festival, street market, sporting event or a funfair.
What really sets SecuriPods apart, however, is the ease of delivery and installation, thanks to their light weight and their design, which enables them to be stacked one on top of another to maximise space in a delivery truck or lorry.
Mark Stone, managing director of Securiscape, said: “Ever since the lorry attacks abroad and in London, focus has been placed on ensuring that pedestrians attending outdoor events can be kept safe with temporary barriers that allow them free access but stop vehicles in their tracks.
“Our original SecuriPods achieved that quickly and without the need for groundworks, but their design did mean that there were issues with transportation.
“Our new design has addressed that effectively and allows us to transport 54 SecuriPods at any one time on an articulated lorry, which is enough to make safe 132m, about the equivalent of 10 average road-widths.
“That is a major breakthrough. Transport costs are a significant factor when planning security arrangements and our new version of SecuriPods offer huge savings for event organisers without compromising on safety, with the added knowledge that these products meet the new international standard.”
Securiscape has developed and launched a wide range of security products, including reinforced security street planters, which have also been tested to PAS 68 standard – the forerunner to the IWA rating - and are capable of stopping a 7.5 tonne truck travelling at 40mph.
A number of the planters have been installed outside buildings and railway stations in Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham and London, while it also manufactures security bollards and street furniture.
Securiscape has also launched a bomb-proof litter bin, which has been given a maximum 10-star rating under the Home Office’s standard “determination of the explosive resistance of litter and recycling bins test”.
"Our Street furniture provides a practical answer to protecting people and property and include benches, seats, tree surrounds, bicycle racks and more. In fact, 100's of applications"
