We’ve built up a proud record of developing innovative security products and we’re delighted to announce that we’ve done it again – by launching an ingenious system capable of turning pedestrian guardrails into barriers capable of saving lives.
A common sight on the UK’s roads, where they can be found outside schools and close to crossings and roundabouts, guardrails are meant only to prevent pedestrians from gaining access to the road.
As a result, they are not designed to withstand the force of a collision with a vehicle and so cannot be relied upon to prevent a deliberate attack on pedestrians.
That has now changed, thanks to Securiscape’s new HVM Guardrail system, which we launched at a meeting of 80 counter-terrorism police officers and representatives from a host of Government agencies earlier this month.
It works by combining an adapted standard guardrail panel with our new Smartpost security system and a host of other innovations.
When put through its paces at the Mira testing facility in Leicestershire last year, the system successfully stopped a 2.5 tonne pick-up truck travelling at 30mph and using the Highways England standard road test.
This performance earned it its IWA-14 rating, the International Workshop Agreement specifying the essential impact performance required from a vehicle security barrier.
The HVM Guardrail system has been specifically designed for ease of installation and so is supplied in kit form and fixed in using the cheapest material on the market – Postcrete - instead of requiring specialist concretes and grouts.
Mark Stone, managing director of Securiscape, said: “We are extremely pleased to be able to bring the HVM Guardrail to market and were delighted with the reaction that it received from the UK’s leading security professionals.
“This product could be a game-changer for councils and companies by enabling them to mount a stronger defence against vehicles simply by using an adapted version of what is already available.
“There are a host of benefits associated with this, both from a planning and a cost point of view, because it adapts off-the-shelf products and means that whole stretches of pavements or walkways can be protected at any one time.
“This successful test result marks a significant moment in the UK’s ability to protect its population. No-one wants to compromise the appearance of our towns and cities with heavy-duty barriers, so this is a way in which we can achieve the same objective simply by using a barrier that people already take for granted as part of everyday street furniture.”
